Shop local club with a big heart launches in Walthamstow

London’s shop-local club has expanded into Walthamstow, offering savings at dozens of E17 businesses and supporting a local food bank.

The Local Buyers Club, the sister company to My Virtual Neighbourhood, is a shop-local movement promoting independent shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes and more. Members receive a discount card and online codes offering savings at hundreds of small businesses across the capital.

They’ve teamed up with a Walthamstow Food Bank (run by the Rukhsana Khan Foundation) and every new member who joins with the code E17KINDNESS will get the first year’s membership half price (£6 instead of £12) and £5 of it will go to the food bank.

Among the East London businesses offering savings and perks to Local Buyers Club members are Greener Habits, St J’s, Rhythm Kitchen, Papino Italian Street Food, Spice Box, Saw Chocolate, DabbaDrop, Victory London Distillery, Peeld, Word Store, Pillars Brewery, Forest Wines, Chickenish, The Green Grill, Mosaic Wines, Buns, Nel Ironing, Wood St Coffee and more.

Basil Fansa, co-founder of the Local Buyers Club, said: “Walthamstow is such a vibrant area – so many small businesses offer great quality and sustainable products and care passionately about the community. This year has been gruelling for so many independents and we’re determined to do all we can to help bring them new and loyal customers.

“We’re also acutely aware that thousands of people in the area are facing hardship. The Rukhsana Khan Foundation is doing amazing work – supporting more than 12,000 people. We’re strong believers in the kindness economy and have been giving back to the communities we serve since we launched three years ago so we’re determined to support this Walthamstow food bank.”

The Local Buyers Club has a strong social conscience – they run one of London’s biggest winter toy appeals for children in poverty and last year their Trick or Eat Halloween event collected five tonnes of food for an East London food bank.

When lockdown hit, the Local Buyers Club team launched My Virtual Neighbourhood – a London-wide directory of independent businesses, in a bid to help Londoners shop-local even from home.

About My Virtual Neighbourhood

My Virtual Neighbourhood launched in March 2020 during the first lockdown – since then it’s had hundreds of thousands of hits, has been praised by the likes of Jay Rayner and has become the shop-local platform for Wandsworth, Hackney, Islington and Camden councils. It has become the main source of online referrals for many small businesses in London and listings are free, with an option for a premium listing to gain more exposure.
